Homeschooling can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re just starting out or considering it for the first time. In this episode, I have the privilege of speaking with Andrea Coleman, founder of BookSchooler.com and a coach with over a decade of homeschooling experience.
Andrea shares her journey of homeschooling in a black family – the challenges she overcame, and the wisdom she’s gained from teaching her children at home utilizing customized curriculum. If you’re considering homeschooling or want to enrich your current approach, this episode is packed with insights, encouragement, and practical advice.
Let’s dive in!
Notes:
- (0:00) Introduction with Dr Mary Coaches: Andrea is the founder and owner of BookSchooler.com, a homeschool coaching practice, and I cannot wait for you all to meet her and hear about the wonderful work that she is doing. My guests are from all over the globe to discuss mental and physical health, ADHD, autism, and more. And like I’ve said to all my patients, I’ll tell you like it is—but with a lot of love.
- (2:18) Black Homeschooling Families – Andrea’s journey into homeschooling began out of necessity when her oldest son struggled with reading and math in school. What started as a way to support him at home became a full-time commitment to homeschooling all four of her children.
- (03:43) Homeschooling Challenges: As a Black homeschooler starting in 2007, Andrea navigated the challenges of a predominantly white homeschool community. She prioritized incorporating Afrocentric literature and history into her curriculum to ensure her children saw themselves reflected in their learning.
- (08:23) Empowering Homeschool Families: Becoming a homeschool coach, Andrea’s passion for equipping parents shines through. Her BookSchooler coaching practice supports families in creating customized, book-centered curriculums and helps parents build confidence in their homeschooling ability.
- (10:22) Customized Curriculum: Homeschooling is highly flexible. Whether you focus on STEM, history, or Afrocentric studies, you can tailor it to your family’s needs and passions. Andrea encourages parents to start, learn as they go, and trust themselves.
