Raising a child on the autism spectrum comes with its own set of challenges, but when we shift our focus to strength-based parenting, everything changes. Instead of seeing limitations, we start recognizing the incredible abilities our children bring into the world. That’s why I’m so excited for today’s conversation with Donald and Caroline Bailey, two dedicated advocates who have spent decades empowering families navigating autism. Their journey with their son, Austin, is a testament to the power of autism advocacy—paving the way for greater independence, education, and hope.

Whether you’re a parent, caregiver, or educator, this episode will inspire you to see potential where others see obstacles. Let’s dive into this heartwarming and eye-opening discussion on The Dr. Mary Podcast.

Empowering Families Through Autism Advocacy: Insights from Donald & Caroline Bailey

[00:00] Welcome to The Dr. Mary Podcast. I’m your host, Dr. Mary—a pediatrician, wife, mother, and empowerment advocate. I invite guests from around the globe to discuss mental and physical health, ADHD, autism, and more. I’ll always tell it like it is—but with a lot of love.

[01:00] Kristen Walker: Hello listeners! I’m Kristen Walker, founder of a mental health podcast network. Today, we’re joined by two amazing people: Donald Bailey, a retired investment advisor, and his wife, Caroline Bailey. Together, they bring incredible insights into autism and advocacy.

[02:15] Dr. Mary: Thank you for having me, Kristen. It’s great to be here.

[03:00] Donald Bailey: Thanks for inviting us. Just to clarify, I was an investment advisor, but I also did financial planning. My wife, Caroline, is here too. Together, we’ve raised our son, Austin, who is 35 years old and on the autism spectrum.

[04:30] Caroline Bailey: Austin has taught us so much over the years. His journey has been extraordinary, especially in the last decade. He’s blossomed in ways we never imagined.

[06:15] Dr. Mary: I resonate with that. My 14-year-old son is on the spectrum, and it’s been a gift to be his mom. Every child brings unique challenges and joys.

[08:00] Donald Bailey: Our son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified) at age four. It was a confusing time, but over the years, his self-awareness and growth have been remarkable.

[12:30] Dr. Mary: That’s incredible. It’s inspiring to hear about his journey to independence and success.

Strength-Based Parenting: Focusing on Abilities, Not Limitations

[20:00] Caroline Bailey: The key is finding their strengths. It’s not about fixing their challenges but highlighting their gifts. Austin continues to amaze us every day.

[28:00] Donald Bailey: One of Austin’s passions is jigsaw puzzles. He even completes them upside-down, working only by shape. It’s just one example of his incredible intellect.

How Advocacy and Community Support Foster Independence in Autism

[35:00] Dr. Mary: My son’s unique way of thinking constantly amazes me. He processes the world differently but beautifully.

[40:00] Kristen Walker: Before we close, tell us about your podcast.

[42:00] Donald Bailey: Our podcast, Your Legacy of Care, shares hope and guidance for families navigating life with children on the spectrum. We focus on education, advocacy, and empowerment.

[45:00] Kristen Walker: Thank you both for sharing your story.

[46:00] Dr. Mary: Thank you, Kristen, Donald, and Caroline. This has been a wonderful conversation.
