Welcome to The Dr. Mary Podcast! In this special episode, we dive into autism, parenting, and neurodiversity with a truly unique guest—my son, Miles. In this special episode, I have the joy of speaking with my son about his life with autism, his unique perspective, and the importance of embracing neurodiversity. Join us as we explore his perspective, his experiences with neurodiversity, and the joy and insights he brings to our family.

Introduction to Miles, Autism, and Neurodiversity

Miles, now 14, shares his honest thoughts on everything from his favorite interests—like anime, comics, and video games—to his experiences navigating friendships, sensory sensitivities, and social situations.

While some people see autism as a challenge, Miles gives us an inside look at his world, showing us that autism doesn’t define him—it’s simply one aspect of his identity.

Exploring an Autism Diagnosis

Exploring what it means for him to be autistic, a diagnosis he received at age 11, Miles reveals how his memory works like a mental scrapbook, his preference for familiar routines, and the strategies he uses, like fidgeting, to help him focus on schoolwork and other tasks.

We also talk about social interactions, and Miles candidly explains how he sometimes feels uneasy in unfamiliar situations or around people he doesn’t know well. But with family and close friends, he’s completely at ease, enjoying the moments in his own way. When asked if autism holds him back, Miles speaks with conviction: he believes there’s nothing that can stop him from pursuing his goals and dreams.

This conversation with Miles is a powerful reminder that embracing differences enriches our families and communities.

Inspiring Others Who Are Neurodiverse

Autism, parenting, and neurodiversity all come together in this candid and heartfelt episode, making it an insightful listen for anyone wanting to understand more about life through the eyes of someone with autism.

I’m grateful for this time with Miles, and I hope our discussion inspires listeners to embrace and support the diverse ways people experience the world.

Thanks for joining us, and remember, different doesn’t disqualify!
